Shaolin Chan medicine originated from the period of Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, built up momentum during the Tang and Song Dynasties, started forming schools during the Jin and Yuan Dynasties and flourished in Ming Dynasty. It is said in traditional Buddhist scriptures: “Five sciences are Bodhisattva has to master.” The five sciences includes: logic, linguistics, medical science, Silpakarmasthana-vidya (Chinese: Gongqiao Ming) and Buddhist studies. Medical science, one of five sciences, is knowledge about medicine, pharmacy, psychology, physiology and so on, which has both herbal medicine and Buddhist medicine. In addition to stressing medical skills, Shaolin Chan medicine pays more attention to medical ethics to save living beings. Based on Buddhist science’s wisdom and the idea, Shaolin Chan medicine used abundant herbs resources, absorbed medical methods inherited from Shaolin culture with a history of more than one thousand years, and continually accumulated medication experience, and then gradually formed many secret prescriptions. Meanwhile Shaolin monks found numerous methods of regimen in Kungfu practice having the dual role of fitness and medical treatment based on science of channels and collaterals while gradually performing internal organs therapy, acupuncture and massage therapy, and point percussion therapy and so on.
