Huiguang (487-536) was born in Dingzhou (modern Ding County in Hebei Province) with the secular surname of Yang. He went to Luoyang with his father at thirteen, later studied Buddhism under Batuo(Buddhabhadra) and received the tonsure at Shaolin Temple. Then he carved Buddhist scriptures and made exegeses for translations of Batuo, such as Avatamsaka Sutra, Nirvana Sutra. Since he could understand thoroughly when he studied Buddhism, he preached the Dharma quite penetratingly. As a result of the above-mentioned reasons, Huiguang was then named as “Saint Novice”. He was not only a master of Theravada Buddhism, but also an expert at Vinaya Buddhism and Huayan Buddhism. In the later period, Huiguang disseminated Buddhism in Luoyang and Anyang, and his fame spread all over the country. Ten of his disciples were also famous for disseminating Buddhism, such as Sengda, Tanyin, Fashang, etc, who were honored as the "Ten Great Virtues". Huiguang died in Yejun (modern Anyang in Henan Province) at age seventy.
