Hongzun (528-608) was born in Xiangzhou (modern Linzhang County, Hebei Province) with the secular surname of Shi. He entered into religion at eight years old and learned Buddhism in many monasteries following his master Ziyun. He had been authorized by the court of the Northern Qi (550-577) to deal with the monks who violated Buddhist precepts. Hongzun was also granted a position by Emperor Wen in the Sui Dynasty even though he still lived in Shaolin Temple. In the seventh year of the reign of Emperor Wen(587), he was recruited to the capital to translate Buddhist scriptures together with Indian monks. He later preached Vinaya doctrine for monks under the imperial edict and was a master of Vinaya Buddhism.
