Sengchou (480-560) was born in Changli County, Hebei Province with the original surname Sun. He entered into religion at Jingming Temple in Julu County, Hebei Province, as a disciple of Zhishi, and later went to Shaolin Temple to study Buddhism under master Batuo. Sengchou was physically weak since childhood, so he determined to practice martial arts, and finally attained a high level skill. He possessed good faculty to understand, as a result of which he made outstanding achievements in Buddhism cultivation and gained Batuo’s praise, so that his Dharma preaching in Shaolin Temple was very influential. Sengchou succeeded Batuo as the abbot of Shaolin Temple. In 552, Emperor Wenxuan built Yunmen Temple in Yecheng (modern Anyang in Henan) for him to disseminate Buddhism, where he wrote Samatha and Vipassana Meditation Practices (two volumes).
