To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the CPC and glorious history and immortal exploits the CPC get by in the form of calligraphy and paintings, Shaolin Temple held the grand Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition for the Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the CPC on May 22, 2021. The opening ceremony was held on the tablet porch of Shaolin Temple permanent residence compound. The present leaders and guests in the opening ceremony included master Shi Yongxin, vice president of the Buddhist Association of China, president of the Buddhist Association of Henan Province and abbot of Shaolin Temple, Yang Wuchao, chairman of the Dengfeng Political Consultative Conference, secretary Lu Qing and deputy director general Ji Hongbin of the Dengfeng Municipal Bureau of Ethics and Religious Affairs, secretary He Yanmu of the Dengfeng Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism master Jiecheng, vice president of the Buddhist Association of Henan Province and abbot of Nanhai Temple in Runan as well as known calligraphers and painters Tang Hai, Zhang Zhongxian, Dong Zhiguo, Ba Keyu and so on.

At the opening ceremony, abbot Shi Yongxin said, “There have been more than two thousand years since Buddhism entered China. Buddhism and and traditional Chinese culture promote each other, add radiance and beauty to each other and create splendid cultural achievements, making an indelible contribution to the development of Chinese civilization. There are the dozens of Buddhists’ paintings and calligraphy works. They use a pen and ink in the hand to convey praise to the CPC serving the people wholeheartedly and protecting the love of the country, the Party and socialism. Shaolin Temple hosted the calligraphy and painting exhibition expressing Shaolin monks strongly support the Communist Party of China and all rise together with the CPC, and also reflecting that Shaolin Temple actively carries out and implements confidence and faith of traditional culture infiltrating religion and adhering to Siniciation of Buddhism.”

Painter and calligrapher Mr. Tang Hai said that Shaolin Temple has always the tradition of loving the country and religion and has been insisting on Shaolin culture going out and serves our country’ s internal affair and foreign relation. 

The calligraphy and painting exhibition was hosted by China Songshan Shaolin Temple and undertaken by Henan Shaolin Painting and Calligraphy Academy. Exhibition contents launch around: guiding principle from general secretary Xi Jinping’ s major speech series on religion; original aspiration and feelings of religious people loving the Party, the country and religion; related content of the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of China; the elite in various fields and all previous state leaders’ exposition, interpretation and others. Exhibition works are collected by China Songshan Shaolin Temple and will also get the collection certificate signed by abbot Shi Yongxin and a picture book whose works are selected to exhibition.

General secretary Xi Jinping stressed on the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Long March: “The spirit is the soul a nation depends on for survival.” At the exhibition, Shaolin Temple specially invited calligrapher Li Yungang copied a long scroll “the revolutionary spirit pedigree of the Communist Party of China” totaling more than 5500 words that comprehensively general secretary Xi Jinping’ s main discourses on the Red Boat Spirit, Jinggangshan spirit, the Soviet Area’ s spirit, the spirit of the Long March, Yan’ an spirit, the spirit of China’ s resistance war, the spirit of Lei Feng, the spirit of Jiao Yulu and the like.

The Chinese nation has a continuous history of civilization over five thousand years, creating the great and profound Chinese culture. As a body of culture, Shaolin Temple has already owned more than 1500 years of cultural accumulation since it was originally built in 495. As a national key relics conservation unit, Shaolin Temple’ s permanent residence compound, Pagoda Forest and Founder Nunnery have been listed as one of the World Cultural Heritage Sites so far; Shaolin Temple’ Sutra-Keeping Pavilion is the national key ancient book conservation unit and Shaolin Kungfu was selected as the national intangible cultural heritage; Shaolin Temple’ s heritage of patriarchal clan stretches for thousands of years and never stops; there are also two founding generals Xu Shiyou and Qian Jun from Shaolin Temple, which demonstrates Shaolin culture’ s sociality and public welfare”...On the calligraphy and painting exhibition, Shaolin Temple specially invited calligrapher Ba Keyu wrote the long scroll “General secretary talks about cultural confidence”, totaling 4000 words.

The Shaolin art of painting and calligraphy is an important component of Shaolin culture. The existing steles of Shaolin Temple were conserved known calligraphers and painters’ works of all ages, such as Wang Zhijing and Pei Cui in the Tang Dynasty, Huang Tingjian, Su Shi, Cai Jing, Cai Bian, Cai Xiang and Mi Fu in the Song Dynasty, Zhao Mengfu in the Yuan Dynasty, Dong Qichang in the Ming Dynasty and so on. Both Bamboo Shaolin monk master Yishan painted and plum blossom master Bieshan painted are the Chinese art treasure of calligraphy and painting.
