Tomb Sweeping Festival or Qingming Festival originated from ancestor worship and spring sacrifice, a traditional festival with both of nature and humanity. Sweeping tomb and having an outing are two customs of the Qingming Festival, orderly passed down to the present day. On March 31, Qingming Festival’ s coming, to thanks for all Buddha, Bodhisattva, founders and eminent monks, monks of Shaolin Temple went to the Pagoda Forest to sweep pagodas and worship ancestors, devoutly sacrificing founders of all generations and remark eminent monks’ family style and great merits while staying true to the mission and striking with diligence.
To carry forward Shaolin culture, the California Senate and House respectively voted in 2004 and 2009 to approve the Songshan Shaolin Temple Festival on March 21 annually when various celebrations could be conducted. To mark the special day, series of activities, hosted by the Shaolin Temple Cultural Center of California and co-shouldered by the United States Kung Fu Federation、Shaolin Temple Cultural Center USA、Shaolin Warrior Academy、U.S. Kung Fu Center、Shaolin Temple Kung Fu Center、Shaolin Kungfu Yuan、MA-Trainer Studio and Shaolin Kungfu Chan Academy, were held aiming to make more locals understand Shaolin culture of Chan Wu Yi with a history of thousands of years benefiting physical and mental health and promote Shaolin culture’ s spread and development in local areas.
On March 16, 2025 local time, to celebrate the annual Songshan Shaolin Temple Day in California, the Los Angeles Shaolin Kungfu Chan Academy, together with teachers and students as well as local friendly people and others, held colorful celebrations to celebrate the official holiday named “Shaolin Temple” in the Country Wood Park.
From March 15 to 18 in 2025, the 16th to 18th day of the second lunar month, to remark Guanyin Bodhisattva’ s compassion and power of vow, China Songshan Shaolin Temple followed the tradition grandly holding the blessing assembly for the birthday of Guanyin Bodhisattva in Yisi Year. Inviting believers of ten directions to share dharma rain, pray for the country’ s prosperity and people’ s happiness and sentient beings releasing from suffering and achieving happiness through chanting, repentance, offering sacrifice and others. To respond to the national call of “Fulfilling the obligation of tree planting, building a beautiful China together”, the Grand Monk Shi Yongxin, abbot of Shaolin Temple, led Shaolin monks extensively planting blessing trees around the Ganlu Platform of Shaolin Temple and working the land to build a ecological, harmonious temple and beautiful temple on the morning of March 12. On March 1, 2025, Shaolin Temple’ s first training courses of Chan (meditation) opening ceremony was hosted in the Meditation Hall of Shaolin Temple. This is a measure to cultivate Buddhist talents with true meditation and practice for Shaolin Temple.
