To celebrate the first Spring Festival on UNESCO’ s representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, Shaolin Temple permanent residents compound was decorated with lanterns and streamers. Under the leadership of abbot Shi Yongxin, Shaolin disciples followed Chinese tradition to paste Spring Festival couplets, have a family reunion dinner, worship ancestors, stay up late on New Year’ s eve and strike the bell for prayer, and also guided people to raise the national flag, and celebrated the Spring Festival with all Chinese sons and daughters, wishing the motherland prosperity and strength, and Chinese sons and daughters good luck, health and safety.
May you welcome happiness with spring: paste Spring Festival couplets on doors of Shaolin Temple’ s hall
Spring Festival couplets originated from Tao Fu couplets in the Five Dynasties. This is a unique Chinese literary style. New Year pictures, along with celebrating spring, blessing the new year and warding off evil activities, shaped a painting art that originated from the mythological painting, having a similar history with Tao Fu.
Pasting Spring Festival couplets
This year Shaolin Temple collected more than 500 Spring Festival couplets through the website, then chose some works fit for halls of the temple, and also invited calligraphers to write devoutly.
The Sangha reunites: Shaolin monks are peaceful and harmony, worshiping ancestors and staying up late on the New Year’ s Eve
Having “New Year’ s Eve dinner” is a tradition of family reunion and seeing the new year in and the old year out, and also a dinner Chinese people value most. Because of the tradition of Chinese Buddhism that monks don’t have a dinner after noon, the Dinning Hall of Shaolin Temple prepared the union meal for people on the noon of the New Year’ s Eve. Shaolin disciples who travel far and wide, preach, and study at home and abroad, and believers and volunteers, come back to the Shaolin family, sharing their experience of the past year and talking about the future together.
On the afternoon of the New Year’ s Eve, Shaolin monks went towards the Patriarch Hall, Shaolin Temple’ s ancestral hall and others to worship and remark founders of generations, cherish the memory of saints for their virtues and merits, and bless Shaolin Temple for its proper dharma abiding.
That night, Karmadana guided and masters lined up to the Abbot Hall to bid farewell to the outgoing year. Abbot Yongxin sent his new year red envelopes to people, also compassionately gave his teachings about Spring Festival customs of the Chinese nation and Shaolin Temple’ s family tradition, and encouraged Shaolin monks to continue improving with energy, carrying forward Buddhist dharma and benefiting sentient beings, and shouldering Buddha’ s family property.
Ring out the old year and ring in the new year: the New Year bell praises a flourishing age
Striking the bell for blessing
Around 11 o’ clock at night, abbot Yongxin and Shaolin Temple’ s disciples offered sacrifice and blessed world peace, the country prosperity and society harmony. At zero o’ clock, abbot Yongxin and disciples orderly walked on to the Bell Tower striking the New Year bell. Sounds of the ancient bell and haunting Buddhist chants spread far beyond miles, which heralds the world is peaceful and harmony.
The country is prosperous and the people are at peace: Shaolin monks raise the national flag and welcome guests
On the first day of the Chinese New Year, under the leadership of abbot Yongxin, Shaolin monks raised the national flag in front of the Gateway of Shaolin Temple, singing the national anthem, praising world peace, the country prosperity and the people at peace, and blessing Chinese sons and daughters health, freedom and happiness!
Then Shaolin Kungfu monks performed UNESCO’ s intangible cultural heritage--Shaolin Kungfu to welcome guests. Abbot Yongxin got to the Gateway and sent his wishes to guests and friends from around the world and believers from ten directions. The doors opened while Shaolin monks and people celebrated the traditional Chinese New Year together. Wish Chinese sons and daughters Happy New Year and good health!
