Shaolin Temple is located under the Wuru Peak of Shaoshi mountains. The name Shaolin Temple (Chinese Shao lin si) originated from dense Shaoshi forest (Chinese: Shao shi mi lin). Throughout the ages, there are different kinds of trees growing inside the Shaolin Temple permanent residence compound and around the Shaolin Temple, which was recorded on steles with deep cultural deposits. Whether ginkgo of over 1,500 years old or ancient locust tree of Qin Dynasty surviving through the fire in 1928 whose grand style remains and green shoots grow up, highlighting the nation’s prosperity and Shaolin Temple’ s organized, close dharma lineage.
The planting of trees benefiting home villages is also an effective method to protect the environment. Planting a group of trees will be able to harvest an endless blessing field. From Feb 21 to 22, 2021, Shaolin monks worked outdoor together to plant the blessing forest of Shaolin Temple.
The first batch of Shaolin blessing trees planted are eucommia (Chinese: Duzhong). Shi Yongxin, abbot of Shaolin Temple, said that eucommia is grade-two national endangered conventional plants being able to green and beautify the environment. Its bark and leaves are used in medicine and tea, having a fine economic value. The trees not only realize temple’s support itself but also establish a friendship with the public by medical materials and tea to benefit more sentient beings.
Shaolin monks worked together to transport saplings and plant blessing trees enjoyably. 350 blessing trees were planted under the direction of experts in agriculture and forestry on 21; monks planted more than 800 blessing trees again on 22. Now the forest of merits amassing kindness and expectation of believers and good-hearted environmentalists has begun to take shape.
